Greta Garbo’s film career happened long before the rise of modern American feminism, so for me, she is a sort of proto-feminist, particularly in her choice of roles. She always played complicated, interesting, and powerful women, as we’ll see below. Her body of work merits another look (or in many cases, a first look). She is utterly compelling, beautiful, and strong in every one of these—and defiantly herself.

Hollywood’s Greatest Year: 1939
The year of 1939 is often cited as Hollywood’s greatest year. And, as films released that year turn 80, there are a few that are usually touted – Gone with the Wind, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach, The Wizard of Oz, The Women (you can rent all of these on DVD Netflix)!

Back in the late 1990s, I was a writer on an tremendously forgettable sitcom that was filmed on the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank. This involved being in the vicinity of such big stars as: Clint Eastwood, George Clooney, and Francis Ford Coppola. which was pretty cool and all, but then I heard something that really made my eyes widen and sent shivers down my spine. A guy who worked on the lot told me that the office I was in was once the office of the Epstein brothers. Whoa. Philip and Julius Epstein.
