As opposed to W.C. Fields, Dean Martin’s drunken legacy was all an act. The “Volare” crooner formed a long working relationship in a musical comedy act with Jerry Lewis. In their original New York act Lewis, dressed as a busboy, would interrupt and heckle Martin while he tried to sing until the act devolved into improvised slapstick.
