Viewing films is a journey. We watch films, diving into a new story or exploring the filmography of our favorite actors or directors. DVD Netflix allowed me to see several movies that I’ve been eager to see over the years that may not be on streaming or the DVD for which is now hard to find or out of print. During my journey through film with DVD Netflix, here are my favorite films that I have rented:
Adrian designed costumes for films from 1923 to 1952, creating more than just gowns, skirts and blouses. His film costumes contributed to the onscreen fantasy world of glamour and dreams. He also created the signature looks Hollywood stars were known for, such as Jean Harlow’s satin, slinky gowns and Joan Crawford’s broad-shouldered suits. From 1929 until 1943, Adrian created nearly all of Joan Crawford’s on-screen costumes and her personal wardrobe, according to his biographer.
I’m writing this on Friday, the second day of the festival, which means the real sadness of missing out on the 2022 TCM Film Festival happenings has fully settled into my lonely, at-home COVID reconnaissance. I’m feeling well enough to do all the necessary home chores, which makes me think I could tackle a day – until I’m active for about 15 straight minutes and I need to go have an urgent lie down. This is great for idle movie-watching with my substantial library of physical media at my disposal, but useless for anything practical. Around Hollywood, the attendees are starting to put on their snappiest attire and aligning their lanyard swag just so. They’ll be off to their 9am movie of choice in short order. So, let’s not dally further. Did you grab your breakfast and caffeinated beverage of choice? Good. Let’s fire up our imaginations and pretend we’re staring at palm trees.
Last night’s double feature eased you into the festivities. Get up, grab a quick breakfast and coffee and head off to get in your queue for the first round of offerings. You might crave those extra few minutes of sleep, but if you hope to survive, grab sustenance when you can. Everyone’s still a peppy go-getter on Day Two and if you’re eyeballing that morning Multiplex Theater 4 showing, the early-bird most definitely gets the worm. Luckily, since you and I are still at home, we can roll out of bed by 10:00am and catch one of Disney’s animated greats without crossing over Hollywood Boulevard to Disney’s El Capitan – which is an absolutely gorgeous exhibition hall, by the way.
I’ve prepared an at-home guide for the 2022 TCM Film Festival, tracing the entire four-day schedule with programming available to rent on disc from DVD Netflix. Watch at your own pace. A week, a month. It’s your festival. And I hope you do. I hope this whets your appetite and you’ll be inspired to plan your trip for 2023.
As a lover of classic films, I try to recreate movie costumes or the looks of classic film stars for Halloween. People at gatherings generally don’t know who I am, but it’s fun creating a costume or look from a film that I love. Here a few you could try….
While Olympians of today may have a guest spot or brief cameo, in Old Hollywood, athletes were groomed to be full-fledged stars. Talent scouts were particularly in attendance at the 1932 games in Los Angeles. Others went the route of performing after their careers ended. Here are some Olympians who competed in the summer game that later turned to an acting career.
2021 marks the 75th anniversary of one of the best years for movies: 1946. Film noir reigned, Hitchcock was a force to be reckoned with and It’s a Wonderful Life, a little movie that seemed to go nowhere, would soon become one of the most beloved films of all time. In post-WWII America, families were moving out into the suburbs and entertainment came more in the form of television than trips to the movie theatre. Hollywood would be hard hit with this shift by the late 1940s but in 1946, cinema was still king. Here are some notable classic films from 1946, plus a whole bunch more available to rent on DVD Netflix.
When doom and gloom threatens to overwhelm me, I turn to a good classic movie to lift my spirits. I gravitate towards stories with relatable characters who, despite hardships, triumph. Or they’re faced with some harsh truths and learn from their mistakes to become better people. We have to believe that things can change for the better. It’s essential to our survival. Uplifting movies help us discover a glimmer of hope even in the most dire of circumstances.
‘Tis the season for festive libations, holiday cheer, crackling fires, and viewing your roster of holiday movies. Many of us have these yearly essentials, but that doesn’t mean we can’t add some new (old) favorites. Building on Raquel’s list of 5 Gems from the 1940s, I’ll recommend six more classic Christmas-themed films available for rent on DVD.com to warm your hearts this holiday season.
