Last week when I was out with a group of friends and I quoted The Hangover.
“You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack.”
I mean, how can you not quote that movie!? I quote that move left and right, thinking I’m hilarious and I use the quotes as if I just came up with them myself. I just can’t help it as it’s a win-win. The movie is funny. I think I’m funny. It all works out.
But this time was different. My friend replied with, “You know that movie is ten, right!?”
I.
Did.
Not.
After a mix of feelings and thoughts which included “no way,” “how did this happen,” “where did the time go?” and others... I later went home, hopped on the computer, and looked up all of my other favorite movies that are turning ten this year.
In no particular order, here’s my list of my favorite movies turning ten. Shocked that any of these are already TEN? Tweet at me, I’d love to know!
Sherlock Holmes
I absolutely love this movie. It’s fun, I love the setting, the costumes and just the overall story line. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are fantastic together and the movie is still one of my favorites to watch.
Avatar
I remember when this film came out everyone I knew went to go see it. It was everywhere…and for good reason. The storyline and special effects were stunning, and it earned its spot as the highest grossing film of all time. Flash forward to today and there are talks of several sequels and Pandora is a theme park.
Up
I remember the first time I saw Up, I bawled like a baby within the first ten minutes of the movie. To me, this isn’t like any other animated film. It’s packed with emotion and deals with loss (and presented in a way that doesn’t put a damper on the film) and following your dreams.
The Blind Side
The Blind Side was another highly talked about movie and it was everywhere. There was a point in time where you couldn’t even turn on the TV without seeing on of the actors on a talk show discussing the film or the real-life story that the movie was based on. Overall, it’s a great feel-good movie.
The Hangover
I feel like it’s few and far between when a comedy actually makes you laugh nonstop from beginning to end. This movie is packed full of endless laughs, funny one-liners, and many moments where you facepalm and can’t believe the obnoxiousness that’s happening on the screen in front of you. Sadly, the sequels weren’t as good, but this film will always have a place in my heart.
Precious
As another highly talked about film, Precious also hits the ten year mark. I remember watching this film for the first time in college. We were all glued to the screen, experiencing the pain that Precious goes through along with the little glimmers of hope. The film received many awards and was up for countless nominations.
Hachi
I’ve written about Hachi before as this movie got me good. I hadn’t cried that hard in a really long time. This movie is an overall must-see. It’s about love, loyalty, and an incredible bond. When I watched it originally, I had no idea the film was nearly a decade old. This is a great example of how it doesn’t matter how old a film is; it’s the story that matters.
Inglorious Basterds
What do you get when you combine Quentin Tarantino, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, and Christoph Waltz? Another Oscar-winning movie (it got eight nominations!) that’s turning ten this year. I still enjoy this movie as it’s another great Tarantino film.
Zombieland
This is such a fun movie. It’s packed full of action, twists and turns, and laughs and it was easily one of my favorite movies of 2009. If you haven’t seen this movie, be sure to rent it soon because the sequel is coming out in October!
Fast & Furious
As the fourth movie in the franchise, I loved it. They brought back the original cast but with a whole new story line. Its action packed and I was entertained from the beginning to the end. Like the other movies in my list, I also can’t believe this movie is ten! I feel like this whole franchise is still a huge hit with movie lovers.
Of course, there are tons of other great movies that are ten this year. What are your favorites that aren’t on my list?
Last year, I also wrote a blog on my top ten movies turning ten – be sure to check it out if you need more queue inspiration for movie nights!
