Did you know that Kingsman: The Secret Service was one of the top five most rented movies of DVD Netflix in 2015? My husband and I recently watched it a couple years after it came out. We thought it was both hilarious and action-packed! In fact, I think it deserves to be the very first entry into my “Movies That Are Gross but Awesome” list.
Now, before we begin… I admit that there are probably tons of bloody action movies that I’m missing from my list. I tend to be more of a comedy-action movie lover, so all of the included movies are also pretty funny (or have funny moments), too!
Synopsis: Seeing untapped potential in a wayward teenager, veteran secret agent Harry Hart recruits the young delinquent and schools him in the skills that will ultimately transform him into a superspy.
My thoughts: Everyone loves a great spy movie, and this one is totally tongue-in-cheek… or perhaps I should say, cheeky! Loved the entire cast in this, especially Taron Egerton and Colin Firth. This movie was the perfect mix of funny, exciting, action-packed… and a little naughty.
Synopsis: In this gritty revenge saga, an assassin is shot at the altar by her ruthless employer, Bill, and other members of their assassination circle. But she survives and sets out to kill all those who wronged her, saving Bill for last.
My thoughts: Talk about GIRL POWER!? Uma Thurman is an amazing killing machine in these movies and there are so many moments that are equally “EW” and “HECK YEAH!” Apparently 450 gallons of fake blood was used over the course of filming Kill Bill 1 and 2, so you’ve been warned!
Synopsis: Inspired by comic books, high school student Dave Lizewski transforms himself into a masked crime-fighter and becomes an Internet sensation. Soon, Dave's antics inspire a wave of would-be heroes to don costumes and live out their superhero dreams.
My thoughts: I don’t know what I was expecting when I saw this movie, but it was WAY more um… kick-ass than I thought it would be. I went into the movie thinking it would be just a silly ol’ comedy, but it was a really fun action movie! This is also the first time I saw Chlöe Grace Moretz, playing Hit Girl, and she is like a full bottle of awesome in a little body. There is also a Kick-Ass 2, but somehow I haven’t seen it yet… looks like I’ll be adding it to my DVD Netflix queue!
Synopsis: Hit man Chev Chelios tears through the streets of Los Angeles in a race to save his own life and his girlfriend. Chelios has been poisoned, and the clock starts ticking when he learns he can elude death if he keeps his adrenaline pumping.
My thoughts: Okay, I’m going to come right out and say that parts of this movie were pretty stupid. HOWEVER, I love Jason Statham and he carries the entire movie on his manly shoulders. It may not be award-winning, but it is really fun, full of action… and a little bit gross.
Synopsis: Prone to ruthless violence, ex-mercenary Wade Wilson acquires superhuman healing powers in the wake of a failed research experiment that also leaves him disfigured. Taking on the alter ego Deadpool, he's determined to hunt down the man responsible.
My thoughts: If you enjoy superhero movies but want them to be a little grittier and full of sarcasm, Deadpool is pure perfection. Ryan Reynolds is at PEAK Ryan Reynolds and this movie made a ton of money for a reason… it’s AWESOME. The second one is pretty fantastic too!
Add Deadpool 2 to your queue, too! The second one keeps up the raunchy and energetic mix of comedy and action.
