Horror movies are packed full of scary music, gruesome deaths, and scenes that make you jump out of your seat. These films wouldn’t, however, be what they are without their main character – the villain! The following horror movie characters have left me completely terrified and looking over my shoulder for weeks after watching the film.
In no particular order, here are my favorite characters that STILL give me nightmares.
Played by: Robert Englund
Why he’s horrific: This villain doesn’t come after you while you’re awake… he waits until you’re asleep! Freddy Krueger haunts your dreams so your nightmares are legit, real-life nightmares.
Played by: Bill Skarsgård
Why he’s horrific: He’s a clown. If that isn’t enough, he lures children into sewers and hunts them. Plus, have you heard his laugh? Oh… and he’s a clown.
Played by: Tony Moran
Why he’s horrific: This character could actually exist, and that’s what makes him terrifying. A masked man that stalks and murders people? The odds of this actually happening are much higher than what happens in other horror films. This could be anyone! For this reason alone, he made the list.
Played by: Charles Lee Ray
Why he’s horrific: Sure, he’s a doll. There is no way this could happen in real life. What makes Chucky terrifying, though, is the fact that’s he’s small. So he can virtually pop out of nowhere and kill people. And dolls are creepy.
Played by: Linda Blair
Why she’s horrific: Demonic possession. This is another film situation that arguably could happen. She loses complete control of herself to a demon. How about that scene with the two priests where her bed levitates? Completely. Terrifying.
Played by: Gunnar Hansen
Why he’s horrific: While the majority of other horror movie characters come out at night, Leatherface isn’t intimidated by the light; he’ll come out at any time of the day. Imagine being chased in the daytime by a skin-wearing madman with a chainsaw. The noise from his chainsaw alone is haunting – pair that with his mask, and you’ve got one heck of a scary character.
Played by: Jack Nicholson
Why he’s horrific: Having your dad lose his mind while you, him, and your mom are alone in a giant, isolated hotel would be a nightmare. But this character is a mess and actually does lose it, which makes this character so disturbing. Physical violence, drinking, emotional abuse, and rage. This character does it all and you never know what’s going to happen next.
Played by: Tobin Bell
Why he’s horrific: Does this man even directly kill anyone? Or do all of his victims contribute to their own deaths? He’s a smart, twisted, dying psychopath that has figured out a way to kill people if they fail to complete a challenge/game.
Played by: Miko Hughes
Why he’s horrific: A child that was resurrected and turned into a zombie? If that doesn’t sound creepy enough, the worst scene for me was when he popped out from underneath the bed and sliced Jud’s Achilles tendon. I squirmed at that scene in the movie. Not only is he small, but he’s vicious.
Played by: Warwick Davis
Why he’s horrific: Small characters are making my list tonight for the reason that because they are small, they can pop out at any time. They can hide under beds or come crashing down from your ceiling. This character even pops out of the refrigerator. Nowhere is safe and mix that with his startling appearance, I hope I never run into a real leprechaun. I’d faint on the spot.
