I kind of feel like I grew up with Drew Barrymore. She comes from an acting family and has been in television and movies since she was just 11 months old (she started with a dog food commercial). While she actually had her film debut in the movie Altered States (1980), most people recognize her role as Gertie in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) as her first big role.
Drew is celebrating her birthday on February 22nd, which makes now a perfect time to revisit some of my favorite movies. It was really hard to narrow them down because DVD Netflix has almost FIFTY of her movies available for us to watch!
Here are my top 10 Drew Barrymore movies (in release order):
Steven Spielberg's 1982 smash hit tells the heartwarming story of the special bond 10-year-old Elliot forges with an alien he names E.T. Drew Barrymore plays Gertie and won Young Artist and Best Supporting Actress awards for her work in the movie. E.T. was also the highest-grossing film of the 1980’s and made Drew one of the most famous child actors of the time.
As the streetwise new girl at a posh private school, Ivy (Drew Barrymore) will do anything to fit in. When shy but wealthy Sylvie Cooper (Sara Gilbert) invites Ivy into her privileged world, Ivy entangles herself with Sylvie's producer father (Tom Skerritt) and beautiful mother (Cheryl Ladd). The tensions in their Beverly Hills home run deep, providing a license for malice that Ivy quickly exploits in this erotic thriller.
Horror maven Wes Craven – paying homage to teen horror classics such as Halloween and Prom Night – turns the genre on its head with this tale of a murderer who terrorizes hapless high schooler Sidney Prescott by offing everyone she knows. This movie was particularly shocking with how it utilized Drew Barrymore in the beginning (no spoilers here!).
Orphaned as a child, Danielle is treated like a servant by her wicked stepmother and two stepsisters. When Danielle stumbles onto Prince Henry, who's fleeing an arranged marriage, the two inspire each other to resolve their respective troubles.
After his fiancee leaves him at the altar, wedding band front man Robbie befriends reception hall waitress Julia, who enlists him to help plan her wedding. Romantic sparks fly as the two spend time together in this love letter to the 1980s. This is my FAVORITE of the Drew and Adam Sandler pairings of the 90’s!
Aspiring reporter Josie Geller goes undercover as a high school student to pen a page-turning teen exposé. But when her hopelessly dorky past comes back to haunt her, she turns to her cooler older brother for help.
Three beautiful women who take on top-secret assignments for a never-seen boss use their looks, charm and martial-arts training to kick butt on the trail of stolen software in this flashy reboot of the classic 1970s television series.
A has-been pop star gets the comeback chance of a lifetime when a teen singing sensation asks him to write and record a duet with her. But he can't write lyrics to save his life, so he enlists help from a quirky woman who has a way with words.
Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, and Scarlett Johansson lead an all-star ensemble of characters dealing with the pitfalls of love and human interaction in this big-screen adaptation of Greg Behrendt's best-selling book.
Small-town teen Bliss dodges her mother's beauty pageant plans in favor of joining a knock-'em-sock-'em all-girl roller derby team. As Bliss gains notoriety on the track as Babe Ruthless, her thrilling double life begins to catch up with her.
Ensconced in the Los Angeles suburbs, husband-and-wife realtors Joel and Sheila are an ordinary – though vaguely discontented – couple. But when Sheila undergoes an abrupt transformation, their lives take a surprising turn.
