We all have a movie star crush, right? I mean, EVERYONE has that one (or more) star where they just stare at them with heart-eyes and will basically see anything they star in. RIGHT?!
Well, for me it’s The Rock. Or, Dwayne Johnson if you’re fancy.
Fun fact: When searching for movies with The Rock in them on DVD.com, you have to use his real name otherwise you’ll end up with the Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage movies.
I wanted to share some of my favorite movies starring him. But narrowing down my favorite movies was difficult… I mean, just look at the sheer number of movies come up when you search Dwayne Johnson on DVD.com.
Here are my top eight favorite Dwayne Johnson movies (and one I haven’t seen yet that’s in my queue):
Synopsis: This aquatic animated tale follows the journey of Moana Waialiki, a plucky Polynesian teen who sets out on a long and perilous ocean voyage in search of a mythical island, aided by the demigod Maui.
I love basically every single thing about Moana. The visuals, the songs, the message… and The Rock. As Maui he is hilarious AND he sings. What’s not to like?!
Synopsis: Looking to retire and open a restaurant, a bounty hunter named Beck gets roped into one final assignment: fetching his employer's errant son from the Amazon jungle. Along the way, Beck finds himself involved in a treasure hunt and a rebel uprising.
I recently re-watched this movie and it is just as funny as it was when I first saw it 15 years ago. In addition to Dwayne Johnson, this movie stars Swann William Scott, Rosario Dawson and Christopher Walken. It’s super funny and the action is pretty great too!
Synopsis: When the identities of secret agents are compromised, hapless but eager analyst Maxwell Smart is promoted and teams with the far more capable Agent 99 to thwart the evil terrorist group KAOS in this comedy caper based on the classic TV show.
I loved this movie when it came out and it somehow ended up in my DVD collection with a local bookstore went out of business. So FUNNY and I’m sad they never made a sequel.
Synopsis: Four teenagers in detention discover an old video game console with a game they've never heard of. When they decide to play, they are immediately sucked into the jungle world of Jumanji in the bodies of their avatars (Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan). They'll have to complete the adventure of their lives filled with fun, thrills and danger or be stuck in the game forever!
I loved the original Jumanji and I was curious to see how they would update that with the latest movie. It was super funny and entertaining and I can’t wait to see the sequel!
Synopsis: When a career accountant reconnects with a former classmate who now works as a CIA operative, the mild-mannered number-cruncher soon finds himself waist deep in a lethal counterespionage operation.
You’ve got to love the Kevin Hart/Dwayne Johnson pairing, right?! There is a part in the movie where The Rock is wearing a tight-fitting unicorn shirt and I swear I almost fell off my seat because I was laughing so hard.
Synopsis: Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz return as the intrepid Egyptologists in this rousing sequel. This time they unearth a prehistoric relic capable of releasing cataclysmic forces and satanic warriors led by the sinister Scorpion King (pro wrestler Dwayne Johnson, aka "The Rock"). Meanwhile, evil mummy Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), revived by his reincarnated paramour, schemes to snatch control of the Scorpion King's power from its unsuspecting sentinels.
I love these Mummy movies (not a fan of the latest one with Tom Cruise) and The Rock joined our Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as the baddie in this one. He later went on to have his own The Scorpion King movie… but that one isn’t on this list because it’s um… not great.
Synopsis: Street racer and ex-convict Dominic Toretto and his crew return for more fast and furious action. In this installment of the hit franchise, their adventures take them to Iceland, Cuba and New York City to battle their adversaries.
I know that Dwayne Johnson was in more than one of the Fast and Furious movies, but I really liked The Fate of the Furious when we saw it in the movie theaters. The action was insane and I loved the chemistry between Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.
Synopsis: It's time to crack some heads when former Special Forces grunt Chris Vaughn returns to his hometown to revive his family's lumber mill business, only to discover that drug dealers and crooked casino owners have taken control.
This one is an oldie but a goodie that offers some great kick-ass Rock in his natural habitat of kicking ass and taking names.
In my queue:
Synopsis: In this spinoff from "The Fast and the Furious" franchise, all bets are off when diplomatic security agent Luke Hobbs and reformed assassin Deckard Shaw -- formerly adversaries -- agree to work together.
This movie isn’t even out yet… it’s scheduled to be released in theaters in August. With that being said, it’s already in my queue because I’m sure I’ll want to see it more than once!
