First off, I should point out that I’m a total wimp when it comes to scary movies. So if you are looking for a list of movies that will make you pee your pants in fear… this is NOT it. However, if you like a little bit of spooky fun: read on!
Synopsis: Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy star in this supernatural family comedy as a trio of 17th-Century sibling witches who are accidentally resurrected in the 20th Century by teenager Max.
My Thoughts: All I have to say is: Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy! The three of them are total witch squad goalz (as the kids say). This movie is rated PG, so it’s safe for kids and scaredy pants adults alike. It’s also super funny, so if you haven’t watched it lately, add it to your queue!
Synopsis: Bill Pullman plays James Harvey, a ghost doctor hired by Carrigan Crittendon (Cathy Moriarty) to rid Whipstaff Manor of spirits, so she can find a treasure trove rumored to be hidden there. But her plan backfires when James's daughter Kat (Christina Ricci) befriends Casper, the friendly phantom who inhabits the place along with The Ghostly Trio, who disdain humans.
My Thoughts: I had such a ‘wanna be her’ crush on Cristina Ricci in this movie. Now I just wish for that smooth pale skin… This is another family friendly, PG-rated movie that is totally fine for kids to watch. In fact, I think I’ll be introducing my 6-year-old to this one this year.
Synopsis: The beloved macabre family takes to the big screen in a tale that centers on con artists out to swindle them by introducing a bogus Uncle Fester into their home.
My Thoughts: Another perfect Christina Ricci movie for Halloween! I remember that I loved this one when it came out in the 90’s. My son and I watched this last Halloween and I didn’t realize how many belly-laughs would come from Uncle Fester, Thing and Lurch! This one is a total winner for the season.
Synopsis: Sisters Sally and Gillian Owens are modern-day witches whose love lives are complicated by an unusual curse: Men who fall in love with them meet untimely ends. But against the advice of their eccentric aunts, the sisters continue to seek romance.
My Thoughts: Oh my gosh, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman were SO GOOD in this movie. How have they not teamed up again? Someone needs to get on that. Maybe a sequel? This one is PG-13 and I remember being a little freaked out at the ex-boyfriend stalker/zombie… so maybe don’t let little kids watch this one (unless they are less of a scardy cat than I am…).
Synopsis: A young couple who drowned return to their house as poltergeists but must enlist the help of a goofy ghost to put a scare in the rude new owners. Unfortunately, he's got a diabolical agenda of his own.
My Thoughts: Wait, this is rated PG?! I’m going to need to rewatch this, because I remember there being some randomly scandalous bits in this one. LOVED this movie back in the late 80’s and this one is absolutely on my ‘rewatch in October’ list this year!
