You may know him as Van Wilder. Or maybe the hot dad (without the ‘dad bod’) that tweets hilarious thoughts about his children. Or maybe you know him as Blake Lively’s husband. Or maybe just… Deadpool. Any which way, that sassy and sexy beast known as Ryan Reynolds is celebrating his birthday on October 23rd. In honor of the hottest Ryan* having a birthday, I figured I’d put together a list of my favorite movies starring our Canadian birthday boy!
Synopsis: Random employees at the restaurant Shenaniganz kill time before their real lives get started. But while they wait, they'll have to deal with picky customers and overenthusiastic managers determined to build the perfect wait staff.
My thoughts: I’m pretty sure this was required viewing for anyone who worked as a waiter or waitress. It’s one of those ‘oh my gosh, it’s so TRUE’ movies… but to the hilarious extreme. With a cast that includes Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris, Justin Long and Dane Cook… well, it was that perfect mid-2000’s kind of movie. After watching you may never want to eat at a restaurant again though…
Synopsis: After being snubbed by his high school crush, an overweight nice guy moves to Los Angeles, where he slims down and blossoms into a womanizer. But when he's stranded in his hometown, he bumps into the girl who once broke his heart.
My thoughts: Oh wow, remember back in 2005 when Amy Smart was the perfect ‘hot girl next door’ character?! I loved this movie because it is basically Ryan Reynolds being a great big dork. Also, Anna Faris is in this one too and she is absolutely hilarious. I loved every scene of Ryan and Anna together and now I feel like they need to be in another movie ASAP.
Synopsis: When overbearing book editor Margaret Tate learns that she's in danger of losing her visa status and may be deported back to Canada, she forces her put-upon assistant, Andrew Paxton, to marry her.
My thoughts: I really loved the chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds in this movie. I remember laughing hysterically through many different parts of the movie, including the nude scene. Which sounds kind of bad, but it really funny! I’m adding this one to my re-watch list right NOW!
Synopsis: Prone to ruthless violence, ex-mercenary Wade Wilson acquires superhuman healing powers in the wake of a failed research experiment that also leaves him disfigured. Taking on the alter ego Deadpool, he's determined to hunt down the man responsible.
My thoughts: I love superhero movies and this one was a doozy. Ryan Reynolds IS basically Deadpool. I can’t imagine anyone else playing the part. He is so perfectly snarky and physical and all around funny in this role. So yes, of course I also loved Deadpool 2 and will be first in line for Deadpool 3. And by ‘first in line’ I mean I’ll try to find a babysitter and go while it’s still in the theaters…
Synopsis: Fate comes full circle when a top bodyguard takes on the job of protecting the world's best hit man, who's bound for the International Criminal Court in the Netherlands to testify against an Eastern European country's ruthless ex-ruler.
My thoughts: This one previously came up on my Date Night Movies that Won’t Put You Both To Sleep list. At the time I said this movie was basically Samuel L. Jackson trying his hardest to get Ryan Reynolds to break character… and I stand by that statement. This movie has it all: action, comedy, lots of F-bombs. ALL of it! It looks like a sequel has been announced, currently titled The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard… so sign me up!
