As a family, we love exploring our many eclectic interests — music, art, nature, culture, and counterculture. We also love watching movies and TV shows together during “family night.”
DVD: Can you tell us a bit about the epic first date you went on?
Liz: Aaron took me on the best first date ever. I had forgotten that I told him about my favorite movie, which is Forbidden Zone (1982)—a completely obscure Oingo Boingo film. Aaron remembered that, and a couple weeks later when he asked me out, he had rented the Forbidden Zone, and projected it on the side of a semi-truck out at an airport for our first date. We had our own private drive-in movie.
Aaron: Not bad! (laughs)
DVD: Not bad? That’s incredible! What a creative first date for a couple who loves film. Do you still watch DVDs together today?
Liz: I feel like it’s become kind of a fixture in the house. You always have a couple red envelopes laying around, and we have a lot of inside jokes that come out of things that we’ve watched via DVD Netflix together.
DVD: You’ve been members of DVD Netflix since 2005! As a long-time member, what do you love about the DVD service?
Liz: We live in a rural area where the digital divide is a thing. Streaming video doesn't work very well on data-limited satellite internet connections, so we rely on DVD Netflix for entertainment. Oh, and the nearest movie theater is an hour away. I love the selection and that I can still see all my favorite movies and shows without buffering, a long commute, or an expensive satellite TV bill.
DVD: And of course, you have another important reason to avoid the hour drive to the theater. Can you introduce us to him?
Liz: This is our senior German shepherd dog, Ringo. We adopted him from Peace of Mind Dog Rescue after his graduation from the Living Unchained program in October 2017. With him in the house, we've instituted "family night" on the weekends, where we all curl up on the couch together to watch DVD Netflix. Nothing feels better than when he sighs and rests his big ol' head on my lap as we're watching a movie.
DVD: Does Ringo get to partake in a bit of popcorn during movie night too?
Liz: He has a lot of food allergies, so his treats are limited. But he will instantly destroy any stuffed animal he encounters with utmost glee.
DVD: Oh no! There’s no saving those stuffed animals from their fate, but what about for Aaron and you? Has there ever been a time when DVD Netflix has saved your day?
Liz: Any time something challenging or traumatic happens, like the death of a loved one, I like to zone out with a light-hearted movie. Watching really dumb comedies like Super Troopers (2002) and Big Daddy (1999) helped get me through some difficult, grief-stricken occasions.
DVD: Absolutely. Movies are life-savers for so many of us. What are ten of your favorite films to enjoy together?
Liz: It’s so difficult to pick just ten, but here are a few of our families all-time favorites.
