Thousands come from across the globe to attend one of the biggest and prestigious events in New York City. I'm speaking of New York City Comic Con 2019. Cosplayers converge on Jacob K. Javits Convention Center to share their love for characters in animation films, comics, and books. Event attendees enjoy special panels, vendors, and awesome surprises.
The event took place on October 3-6, 2019 and I had the opportunity to interview long-time DVD Netflix subscriber, Addie. Addie participates in many of our DVD Netflix chats and has obtained several cool prizes through DVD Nation! Check out the interview below.
Thank you for granting the interview! I'm excited to speak with you about your New York Comic Con 2019 experience. I know it was amazing.
Addie: I've been attending Awesome-Con (Washington DC's comic con) for a few years but I've never attended any of the other bigger conventions before. When I learned that New York Comic Con was happening on my actual birthdate I just had to attend. I'll be honest, I had no idea just how big the event would be. The tickets sold out super-fast and I wasn't able to get tickets for all of the days, but I was lucky enough to snag two tickets for Thursday, October 3rd.
I felt a bit intimidated when I first entered the convention. IT WAS HUGE!! You could fit two Awesome Cons in the New York Comic Con and there would still be room left for another convention.
Even with the massive amount of attendees, it was well controlled. The convention badge was your magic ticket for full-on fun. You swiped to enter contests to get exclusive content emailed to you. I was lucky enough to win two of the convention lotteries.
Yes, I agree, they did an amazing job! So tell us about how you prepared to attend the con.
Addie: After I purchased my NYCC ticket in August, it was time to decide what to wear. I knew I had to make a transformation. I had to show my inner badass, so I became.....Robin. Okay, so not the full-on Robin, but I did have a costume shirt with a cape. Next, I studied the guests and booth layout so I could get the lay of the land. I then made sure I had the most comfortable shoes for walking because I planned on being there all day and seeing EVERYTHING.
It was cool! Robin is always a fun cosplay and thanks for showing it's not gender-based! So what makes New York Comic Con special to you?
Addie: Everything my older brother loved, I loved. He loved comic books and I grew up loving them as well. While most of my friends were playing with Polly Pocket and the Care Bears, I was reading up on the New Mutants, Spider-Man, and She-Hulk. I felt a little like an oddball because none of my female friends could relate to me about superheroes or even science fiction. At the NYCC, I got to see all genres, sexes, races, religions come together to celebrate the superheroes, villains, actors, writers, and the creators who brought us these great stories. I felt like I was that 10-year-old girl again, getting immersed in the storylines, the triumphs, and defeats of my favorite superheroes. It was great connecting with people as we waited in line to buy our favorite Funko Pops or pajama bottoms featuring Tina Belcher from Bob's Burgers. And it didn't feel weird that you were sharing a table and eating lunch with someone as Cha Cha from the Umbrella Academy.
I also enjoyed having the opportunity to catch a glimpse of, chat with, and take photos of some of my favorite actors. Oh, while standing in line to get popcorn, Clancy Brown (Mr. Crabs) came onto the main stage during a Q and A session. Talk about geeking out.
I can relate! I had very few friends who were interested in science fiction and superheroes. So who was your favorite cosplay character?
Addie: There were so many great costumes and cosplay mash-ups at the NYCC, but I think my favorite was Fat Thor. He looked so comfortable in his outfit. And I feel like he was sitting on his couch at home streaming "Avengers: Endgame" and realized that he was actually wearing what Thor was wearing, and said to himself, "Hey, I found my NYCC costume!"
[LOL] I LOVE Fat Thor! Is there a character you would love to cosplay?
Addie: I would love to dress as She-Hulk. My brother collected the She-Hulk comic books when I was a kid and I've always loved her story.
She-Hulk is a great character. Marvel Studios is producing a Disney+ streaming television service, and this show was announced at the Disney+ panel at the D23 convention in 2019. This is why panels are awesome to attend. You discover so much!
There were so many vendors at the con. Which ones were your favorite?
Addie: A few of my favorites were Tokidoki, Funko, FYE, and Tee Turtle.
Way cool! Let's talk about your love for movies! DVD Netflix is celebrating its 5 Billionth DVD rental. Tell us about your favorite movies available for rent. How do you use the service?
Addie: I love all movie genres, but I really love cheesy horror movies. The worse the better. I like being able to read previews and reviews of movies before checking them out and seeing movie recommendations based on what I've watched before.
You also participate in DVD Netflix's live Twitter chats. Tell us what you enjoy most about them.
Addie: I like the DVD Netflix chats because it gives me the opportunity to discuss my favorite movies, relive my favorite movie moments, and to discover new favorites from other participants.
What do you consider a good movie night?
Addie: I attend a lot of free movie screenings in DC. A good movie night for me is when the movie lives up to my expectations and more. There are so many remakes and reimagined classics that it's hard to find something that moves me and makes me think.
What would you tell a person who has never rented from DVD Netflix?
Addie: I would tell them to give it a try. They would be pleasantly surprised by their movie selection and availability. And the price is very reasonable, too.
What do you love about the service the most? What would you like them to add or change?
Addie: I love that you get an unlimited amount of movies you can rent each month with either plan. I would like to be able to have more than two movies out at a time.
You can! They have a plan which allows you to have three out at the same time. I use it to review films, plan theme parties, and to binge-watch movies for a weekend.
Again, it was so much fun chatting with Addie and getting her inside perspective on New York City Comic Con as an attendee and a DVD Netflix subscriber! Make sure you bookmark the con's website, so you don't miss next year's event!
