Parker Posey is such the “It girl.” Or maybe she was an “It girl” and is now an “It woman?” I’m not really sure how that all works. But I do know that she has been working in movies with hardly a break since the early ‘90s. On IMDB, she has 100 credits under her name, which is pretty amazing!
I feel a connection with her because she was born in Baltimore, Maryland… so when I saw that she was celebrating her birthday on November 8th, I thought this would be the perfect time to talk about one of my favorite movies of all time… Josie and the Pussycats.
Don’t roll your eyes.
If you haven’t seen Josie and the Pussycats, you have no idea what you are missing.
Synopsis: Josie (Rachael Leigh Cook) and her pussycats, Melody (Tara Reid) and Valerie (Rosario Dawson), think they've hit it big when they get a call from record-company executive Alan Cumming. But their claws come out when they discover they're shills in a plot to feed teens subliminal messages.
Parker Posey plays Fiona, an evil music executive and she is just perfection. I’m not going to give anything away (wait, is a spoiler alert needed after 17 years…?), but she isn’t exactly what she seems. The whole movie is such a smart take on marketing and pop music and what’s hot… and no longer hot.
The music also holds up well and has lived on my Pandora playlist for probably the last decade. So, there’s that. The band was actually fronted by Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleo, so there are some pretty decent songs on the soundtrack. Some of my favorites include “3 Small Words” and “Pretend to be Nice.”
Oh, and don’t even get me started on the satire boy band of DuJour. Oh my gosh, I just fell down a Youtube rabbit hole… please just add this movie to your queue and thank me later!
