Whenever my husband and I get a date night, we typically stick to the tried-and-true: dinner and a movie! We both love a mix of action and comedy… and if we are able to be without our 5-year-old, we usually go for something that has an R rating. You know, because we can!
Here are my top 5 picks for date night movies that won’t put you both to sleep:
I can’t make a list of date night movies without including the Tina Fey/Steve Carell masterpiece, Date Night! In the movie, the long-married couple hire a babysitter and head out for a night on the town. Hijinks ensue. It’s absolutely relatable (in parts) and hilarious and both my husband and I screamed with laughter all the way through the movie.
Our son was born in 2012, so we were kind of out of it when Pitch Perfect became a thing. However, the buzz was so good that we made sure to add it to our DVD queue… you know, when we could stay up past 8:00 pm. I still remember laughing so hard I cried a bit. It may have been helped along with baby hormones. Any which way, we both thought the movie was so great that we ended up seeing the next two in the theater.
Okay, so I should be honest and tell you that I have a bit of a crush on Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson. Okay, more than “a bit”. So when I saw that the newest Fast and Furious movie had a big old helping of The Rock, I knew we had to see it! My husband loves fast cars, I love The Rock… it was a match made in heaven. GREAT action movie too!
We actually weren’t sure whether to make this one a date night movie, or to take our son to see it. We decided to see it on our own and we both loved the action and the ‘new’ origin story of everyone’s favorite spider dude. We liked it so much that it is currently in our DVD queue for our son to watch too!
You guys. This movie is basically Samuel L. Jackson trying his hardest to get Ryan Reynolds to break character. It was as if a blood-and-guts action movie and a super curse-filled comedy had a baby, which then cursed while shooting people. We laughed through the entire movie and would totally watch it again at home if we weren’t afraid that our kid would somehow overhear it and start talking like Samuel L. Jackson….
