Warm summer evenings are perfect for watching movies outdoors! Turn your backyard into a drive-in, or rather, sit-in, movie theater.
First order of business: get a projector and a projector screen. There are tons of affordable, portable options out there. We got our set for about the cost of seven movie theater tickets!
If you have munchkins bouncing around that just can't wait for movie night to start (and make it a little difficult for you to get the screen and projector set up), distract them with popcorn. It works every time.
Movie night calls for snacks! Set up a popcorn station that's fully stocked with movie theater-inspired popcorn cups and several shakers of your favorite flavors and seasonings. We're suckers for white cheddar and lots of butter.
Even better, dress up your popcorn station with some decor. We found this spirited sign for just a few bucks at a local thrift shop.
If you have impatient little ones running around as you set up (like we did), you'll need a bottle of an adult beverage nearby for your own sanity and pleasure.
Summer evenings and summer nights are meant to be enjoyed outside! Have fun in the fresh air as you wait for it to get dark enough for the projector. Sit around on a nice blanket or towel. Roll around, even. Endlessly.
Finally get dark enough outside? Awesome, it's time to start the show! Grab a seat, whether it's a lawn chair, a beach towel, or a cool backpack/stool hybrid.
We also recommend having pillows or seat cushions (if you're using hard seats that you may start feeling halfway into the movie), as well as a pile of blankets and beach towels to snuggle up with when it gets cool.
Make sure the popcorn bowl is in a central location so nobody blocks anybody else's view while reaching. Or use the fun individual popcorn cups pictured earlier.
When the kids go to bed, it's time for the grownups to get their movie night. A benefit of waiting: you'll have better picture quality since it'll be completely dark by then.
For adults, we recommend lounge chairs or a cushy outdoor futon like this one. Time to kick back and relax!
