I’ve always loved Anne Hathaway. She’s a great actress and also a little goofy, which is basically my favorite combo. Also, one time a pre-teen daughter of a friend was totally convinced that I was “that princess girl from the Princes Diaries movies”… so that was basically the best compliment of my life.
And now that I think about it, I’m hoping the girl meant AFTER the makeover, not when Anne was rocking a unibrow…? Either way, let’s revisit my favorite five Anne Hathaway movies!
Synopsis: The life of gawky Mia Thermopolis changes drastically after learning she's the heir to a European principality's throne. But as her royal grandmother schools Mia on conducting herself with gracious disdain, she ends up at odds with her best friend.
My Thoughts: What gawky pre-teen DIDN’T want to find out that they were actually a princess?! Add in a fabulous makeover, some light romance and an over-the-top best friend and this was one of the fantastic feel-good movies of the early 2000’s! Anne Hathaway was perfection in this part and Julie Andrews, Heather Matarazzo and Mandy Moore made for a fabulous supporting cast.
Synopsis: After taking a job in the Big Apple as assistant to powerful fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, small-town girl Andrea is thrilled, until the magic wears off. She's left feeling battered, used and wondering whether the hard work will pay off.
My Thoughts: I’m pretty sure that this movie is the entire reason I decided to get bangs. Anne Hathaway once again goes through a makeover (why do they keep making her over… she’s gorgeous?!) and this time she is all about the Fashion (with a capital “F”, of course). I didn’t really care a ton about the boyfriend storyline, but I loved the girl kicking butt on the business side of things. Anne was awesome in this, and of course Meryl Streep was an absolute scene-stealer.
Synopsis: When the identities of secret agents are compromised, hapless but eager analyst Maxwell Smart is promoted and teams with the far more capable Agent 99 to thwart the evil terrorist group KAOS in this comedy caper based on the classic TV show.
My Thoughts: I feel like this movie kind of went under the radar, but I absolutely loved it. It was a great take on the classic television show and also poked fun at many other spy caper-type movies. Anne played the straight-man to Steve Carell’s goofy character. The Rock is also in this, which makes it a ‘must watch’ for me!
Synopsis: Agreeing to participate in a community outreach program, e-commerce entrepreneur Jules Ostin hires a 70-year-old intern – who ends up bringing his special brand of business savvy to her fashion enterprise.
My Thoughts: My husband and I recently watched this one and he basically made fun of me the whole time because of the similarities of Anne’s character “Jules” and me, Joules. Names aside, she’s a strong woman in business who gets into an absolutely adorable relationship with her 70-year-old intern, played by Robert De Niro. I absolutely loved the chemistry between them in the movie and highly recommend this to anyone who wants quirky comedy to snuggle up with.
Synopsis: The tide has turned and it's a whole new "Ocean's." Danny Ocean's sister, Debbie Ocean, recruits a seven women crew to plan and execute the heist of the century at New York City's star-studded annual Met Gala.
My Thoughts: This one just came up in my DVD queue and I am so happy I finally had a chance to sit down and watch it! I wanted to see it in the theater… but we often don’t have a babysitter for our 6-year-old son, so Netflix DVD to the rescue! I loved this extension to the Ocean’s universe, this time with Sandra Bullock taking over the lead from George Clooney. The cast also includes Cate Blanchette, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sara Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, and Helena Bonham Carter. I loved the old-school feel to the caper and Anne Hathaway was pretty fabulous as the spoiled star! So GOOD.
