With the ease of subscription services, the modern date night has evolved. No longer is it necessary to spend an exorbitant amount of money to have dinner and a movie. You can add a DVD to your queue and have your favorite film delivered, then order some grub on an app and have it arrive right to your door!
Thus, the challenge no longer remains how to save money, but how to find a movie you’re both interested in watching. So, here are my favorite films that have it all for everyone involved: adventure, wit, and even a little romance.
Classics have a special place in our heart, and Casablanca has found a permanent spot. Humphrey Bogart plays a nightclub owner who’s escaped to a town in Morocco for a slower life. But when his former lover, Ingrid Bergman, shows up with her husband (who is an internationally wanted man), all hell breaks loose. “Here’s looking at you,” movie fan.
How can you go wrong with Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, the Los Angeles landscape, and a brilliant bank heist in one film? You just can’t. So, if you’re searching for an escape from your regular day, and maybe even the snow, add Point Break to your queue right now.
There’s nothing more exciting than a futuristic world full of interstellar danger, and Chris Pratt’s motley crew in Guardians of the Galaxy makes for one thrilling story. Take a wild ride straight through the best songs of the 1970s while Chris Pratt et al save the Universe.
No date night is complete without one of those “cling to me and I’ll keep you safe” moments, and no movie supplies more of those than Jaws. The story that convinced everyone that even their bathtub had sharks in it lurks its way onto our date night list because it’s thrilling, suspenseful, and sure to get your heart racing.
Bird on a Wire is one of those movies that could fit on virtually any list, but if you haven’t seen it yet, then it’s your next date night must. Rick Jarmin is placed in the Witness Protection Program after he rats out a drug kingpin, but when he runs into the former love of his life, everything changes in an instant.
When Michelle Pfeiffer's husband gets taken out by his fellow mafioso members, she quickly becomes the pinnacle single 80’s mother, and also unknowingly begins a sordid love affair with the FBI agent hot on the mob boss’s trail. Married to the Mob has suspense, action, humor, and all the fresh-faced nineties stars we could ever want.
No '90s film has stolen as many hearts as Jerry Maguire. Tom Cruise plays a sports agent-gone-rogue when he’s let go from his job at a prestigious firm. He fights to keep his clients while cultivating a budding romance with Renée Zellweger, and winning us over with his ‘underdog’ antics. “Show us the movie!”
Undercover journalist Irwin “Fletch” Fletcher may have been a bumbling investigator, but he sure was a smooth lover. With an upcoming article about L.A.’s drug trade, he takes to the beaches for information, but instead finds himself in a world of trouble and suspense. Hired for murder and falling in love with his victim’s wife, Chevy Chase delivers one of his best performances ever in Fletch.
If your regular, old Date Night isn’t cutting it, I suggest you rent Steve Carrell and Tina Fey’s version as soon as possible. Their on-screen chemistry and hilarious hijinx make for a thrilling night, even from the comfort of your own couch.
