10 Movies Turning 10 This Year

By Bean Miller

We’re going to see so many awesome movies hit the big screen this year, from Tomb Raider to Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and I couldn’t be more excited to grab a bucket of popcorn, my favorite candy, and hit the theaters.

Between date nights out (who doesn’t love a good dinner and a movie night!?) and movie nights in, my favorite thing about film is the feeling of being so involved in the story that you are transported to a different place and time.

When seeing the list of blockbusters about to hit the big screen in 2018, I couldn’t help to think of some of my favorite movies from the past! Let’s take a trip down memory lane with my personal favorite "night in" movies turning 10 this year that you should add to your DVD Netflix queue.

The Dark Knight

The acting. The storyline. The suspense. This movie was highly anticipated in 2008 and it lived up to all of the hype. Heath Ledger gave me chills as the Joker and this is still one of my favorite action films. If you need a movie rental that will keep you on the edge of your seat... a.k.a your couch… then this is the movie for you!

Gran Torino

Clint Eastwood is talented; we all know this. He not only produced, directed, and starred in this film, but he brought to life a wonderful piece of storytelling. You follow the characters and grow with them throughout the whole story, and they are believable and relatable as well.

I won’t give away the ending but if you’re looking for a great film with an amazing story, rent this and make sure you have a box of tissues nearby.

Iron Man

I’m not going to lie, but when I originally heard that Robert Downey Jr. was going to be Iron Man, I was a bit hesitant. Robert Downey Jr. as a super hero? I couldn’t wrap my head around it. Plus, this movie had so much hype that it could have gone one of two ways…. and it thankfully ended up being the good way! RDJ was fantastic as Tony Stark, and this movie is full of action and humor.

Sex and the City

This movie doesn’t do the series justice, but if you were a fan of the Sex and the City show, then this movie filled your need for more of Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte. I had to add this movie to my list for the sole fact that if you are having a girls' night, this is a fun movie to rent.

Get on your comfy clothes, pour a glass of wine (or make a cosmo), have your best pals over, and cheers to a breezy girls' night!

My classmates and I watched this film while we were on our way to study abroad in London. It made us want to be super cautious of our surroundings, but we couldn’t stop watching it! Liam Neeson is always fantastic to watch, and this is my favorite film of the Taken franchise.

It’s suspenseful, action-packed, and will leave you wanting more (which in this case is great because two more Taken films have since been created). This is a must-rent film for movie night!

Valkyrie is well done. It’s a historical World War II drama about the failed assassination of Adolf Hitler, and is packed full of suspense and a roller coaster of emotions.

Even though you know the outcome before you even start the movie, it's a supremely engaging film. You follow the characters and their emotions to the point where, as the audience, you become stressed and anxious with them! If you enjoy history, rent Valkyrie.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

This film is beautiful and imaginative. The actors are all superb and even though the storyline is simple (it’s the story of a man that’s aging backwards), it’s done in a way that keeps you mesmerized and glued to the screen. Heck, I still talk about this movie to people and it’s one of my all-time favorites. If you want a touching story – rent this. Plus, Brad Pitt is always nice to look at.

Step Brothers

This movie really shouldn’t be on my list. I’ve battled myself for liking this film ever since it first came out. I honestly refused to watch it... but after hearing reference after reference every time I was out and about, I gave in and watched it.

Yes, it’s mindless comedy. Yes, you will facepalm at how silly the movie gets, and yes, you will think about turning it off a few times. Yet, somehow, this movie has grown on me and now I can’t help but chuckle at a few of the scenes. If you need a night in where you don’t have to think and need some comedy in your life, then rent this movie and just go along with it.

Slumdog Millionaire

My favorite aspect of this film is how it’s told. The story follows the life and growth of a man from his start as a small child in the slums to when he’s on an episode of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and is told through a series of flashbacks. This film takes you along the ride for his journey and you will experience so many different emotions. Add this film to your queue if you want a movie that tells an in-depth story and has a great ending.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

This movie still makes me laugh. I can’t wrap my head around that it’s ten years old because this is still one of my go-to movies. It’s quirky, it’s hilarious, and it’s an overall fun movie to watch. Rent this if you want to laugh and watch a quotable film that never gets old.

So there you have it! My 10 favorite movies turning 10 this year. Be sure to let us know when and what you’re watching by tagging #DVDme and @DVDNetflix – happy movie night!
